The Race of the South
A highlight in the Irish racing calendar, the Race of the South is an event not to be missed. The first race in Fore took place on August 28, 1973 in the tiny village of Co. Westmeath around the famous seven wonders. Riders such as the Galligans, Joey and Robert Dunlop, Con Law, Eddie Laycock, Philip McCallen and Sam McClements all raced over the orginal circuit. With solo riders and sidecars, the voice of the Big D would echo around the hills of Fore informing spectators in his own initible way.
Initially, those first races were run by the Fingal Motorcycle Club for a number of years, but when they decided not to run the Race of the South, the North Dublin Motorcycle Club took over. The last Race of the South in Fore village was in 1997, and the event then moved to Walderstown was in 2000 where it continues to run.
The Fore Motorcycle Racing Club was originally founded as a supporters club to raise funds locally to help run the races, and they took over running the races in 1989; and they continue running the Race of the South at Walderstown, Athlone bringing riders such as Derek McGee, Michael and William Dunlop, Michael Sweeney, Kevin Keyes and Mike Browne bringing fantasic close racing everytime.
